At Marvel Builders, Inc., we’re always excited to bring our clients’ visions to life, and our most recent project is no exception. This week, we dove into a flooring overhaul that’s setting the stage for a future kitchen remodel, and we wanted to share all the details with you!
The Starting Point: Out with the Old
Our project began with the removal of the existing 3/4″ hardwood floors, which had served their purpose but had seen better days. Over the last decade, the homeowners had been dealing with noisy and squeaky floors, a frustrating problem that they’d grown used to but were eager to fix. We quickly identified the issue: the original subfloor had not been properly glued down, which allowed for movement and, eventually, all those squeaks.
The Solution: New Flooring with Strong Support
Once the old hardwood was out, we got to work on installing 3/8″ plywood as an underlayment, ensuring a solid base for the new floors. To address the noisy subfloor, we made sure to back screw every single joist before laying down the new underlayment. This method adds a level of strength and stability that will prevent future squeaks, giving the homeowners peace of mind that their new floors will stay quiet and secure for years to come.
Upgrading to Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
After prepping the subfloor, we installed high-traffic luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring throughout most of the first floor. LVP has become a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, water resistance, and aesthetic appeal, and this project was no different. The homeowners loved the idea of LVP for its ability to stand up to daily wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas like the kitchen and living room.
One of the key benefits of LVP is that it mimics the look of hardwood while providing greater resilience to moisture and scratches—perfect for a busy household. The particular LVP we installed offers a sleek, modern look, and we’re thrilled with how it’s turning out so far.
Attention to Detail: Elevation Match
When it comes to renovations, even the smallest details matter. One of our goals in this project was to maintain the same final elevation as the old hardwood floor. This attention to detail allowed us to avoid the need for adjusting door jambs, trims, or stair risers, saving both time and effort while ensuring a seamless look throughout the home. The new LVP flooring matches the old hardwood’s height perfectly, so the transition between rooms is smooth and cohesive.
